Athletico Burough Upsetters

Savage & Best
Athletico launch independent Label.

Athletico formed in 1994 when the Midlands based trio of Alex Sparrow, Kirsty McAra and Simon Fathead got together to offer an alternative night out at Birmingham's Custard Factory. Athletico planned to bring a night of beasts and jazz to a city that was dominated by ethos of fluffy bra-top's and glam house clubbing. The night was a sell-out, featuring guest DJs from Mo'wax and Acid Jazz and attracting 1500 revellers. It provided a blueprint for clubbing that would be the inspiration to take up residency at London's (now infamous) Blue Note, and two years later it's the longest running and most successful night at the club and Athletico have partied from Europe to Mexico.

Athletico recently became the first team of promoters to set up an alternative to the so called 'superclubs' that house music has spawned (Cream, Ministry etc.) with the launch of Athletico at The Sanctuary back in their original stomping ground, Birmingham. Each week the Athletico trio have filled the 1500 capacity venue with a unique mix of entertainment; local street artists, skateboarders, cabaret performers etc. plus the best DJ's on the circuit and live performances from acts that have included The Chemical Brothers and Death In Vegas. With so much already achieved the only question left was where next? Athletico Records is where, London based, the label is totally independent and lovingly designed to ensure the Athletico name keeps it's reputation well in tact.

The first single from Athletico - the label - will be „Fixy Jointy" from Pychedeliasmith (AKA Deam Meredith and Johnny Spunker) on September 1st. Psychedeliasmith hail from that epicentre of chic, Stafford (also hometown of Kirsty, Alex and Simon) and are signed to Athletico as a long term album act A Norman Cook favourite, „Fixy Jointy" featured on his recent NMF, cover-mounted cassette. A month later, on October 6th, follows the release of a single that has been a firm favourite and permanent fixture in the record boxes of Derek Dahlarge et al for months. Previously only available as a hard-to-find import via U.S. label Freeze, „Wedeman" by Selctah (for that's the track in question) has been mixed by Jon Carter for the UK release. In the near future, Athletico will be putting out records from a vast array of artists, including Fluid (another Stafford duo also of long-term interest to the label). Danny Biolette of Renegrade Soundwave, the illustrious Athletico Borough Upsetters (aka Kirsty McAra, Alex Sparrow, Richard Marshall and Dean Meredith) and another Freeze signing from Carlos Berious, which will be remixed by Propellerheads. In amongst all this malarkey will be the release of a new Athletico compilation album which follows their much praised first compilation released by Acid Jazz, based on essential Athletico club night tunes this will come out on the Athletico label on October 27th.

Athletico continue their mad London excursions with nights at two of the capital's best venues The End and The Blue Note - the next of which will be back at The Blue Note on August 16th when Athletico host the Monkey Mafia album launch party.
