"Even if Courtney Love was to sing with Primus or
Patti Smith with Red Hot Chili Peppers, they'd still be unable to fully
reflect Guano Apes' style." (Subway)
Just what is this quotation trying to tell us? Quite simply that it's difficult
not to be fascinated by Guano Apes!
Even when they first started out in 1994 it was more than
obvious that this wasn't just any old band on its way to taking the rock
world by storm. The four band members - all of them in their early twenties
- are already considered eminent authorities on their instruments: Stefan
Ude beats, strokes and hugs the four strings of his bass guitar in a way
that makes the onlooker slightly nervous. At first sight Dennis Poschwatta
looks a little like Animal from the Muppet Show behind his drum kit, yet
he complements Stefan so perfectly that you'd be justified in speaking of
a rhythm section from another world!
Guitarist Henning Rümenapp emphasizes the important points with disquieting
nonchalance, so really there doesn't seem to be a thing missing. Mind you,
wasn't there something else?!
Exactly, the vocalist. Sandra Nasic is the name of this fragile, almost
inconspicuous creature, who razes everything to the ground with her amazing
voice once she gets going. At times aggressive, at others velvety smooth,
and always emotionally charged she adds all sorts of colours to the music.
All these elements are combined on Guano Apes' debut album PROUD LIKE A
GOD.
Songs like "Maria", which cause inch-high goosepimples,
rocky numbers like the first single release "Open Your Eyes" and
tricky crossover fusion crackers like "Crossing The Deadline"
are just what the doctor ordered for all those who enjoy good music! This
may sound slightly corny, but if there's ever been a band to suit the label
"exceptional" in every sense of the word it's got to be Guano
Apes.
Once you've seen this band live you'll understand why they won Germany's
most highly endowed talent competition. 1015 competitors were left empty-handed
at the Local Heroes festival organized by Radio ffn and VIVA TV, and that's
certainly something to be proud of!
Guano Apes live their music one hundred per cent, a fact
which is underlined by a little band anecdote: When Dennis, Henning and
Stefan made their way to Southern Europe to catch a little sun just before
their big breakthrough, the three of them suddenly discovered after only
five days that something was definitely amiss. No, it wasn't mum's home
cooking, what they were yearning for were their instruments and their smelly
old rehearsal room! Without further ado they packed their bags and returned
to home base.
They may come to regret their rash decision yet, because
PROUD LIKE A GOD seems set to enjoy just the sort of success that a monster
album of its kind deserves, so they won't have much time on their hands
to relax during the next three years!!! |
