The concept of a scratch DJ based crew was the brainchild of THE RUF who was pissed off by the lack of scratchin' on wax. In summer 94 he assembled 2 raw dj's (including) Mark One to get busy on the project. At this time there were no dj tunes - Trip hop was just weak instrumentals by kid's who couldn't cut & so the Jeep Beat Collective started to drop bombs on THE RUF LABEL thus enforcing the RETURN OF THE D.J.

In Jan 95 „Nah, nope it's dope" (RUFOO2) was unleashed, followed by „Seconds to detonation" EP which blew up with „the bomb drops" appearing on RETURN OF THE DJ & Justin Robertson's JOURNEY's CD.

The RUF's superb soundscapes & scratch concepts were ripped by Mark on the entirely RUF produced debut LP „Attack of the wildstyle beatfreaks" (RUFOO8). Since it's release in Dec 95 this LP has been hailed as a classic with widespread critical acclaim & plays on Radio 1, Kiss FM and Choice. It sold 2000 units with little distribution & continues to sell well today due to it's cult status & the JEEP BEATs live/compilation appearances. In Mai 96 they also turned in a dope 12 min mix on the DJ FOOD „refried food" PT 6 set on NINJA TUNE.

Throughout 96 with new recruit Loz, the Ruf & Mark One wrecked clubs with a multi deck set up & 2 mics hyped up to generate real beatfreaks hysteria. No music was sacred - the Clash, Hong Kong Phoey, Gary Numan, Pop, Jungle, easy listening, ragga, trip hop, soundtracks all got mashed up into a heady future sound mix-up!

With „Retimed detonation" 2x12" (RUFO 13) in Dec 96 they remixed the finest JEEP BEAT moments & with „hip hop Love" they proved no one can test the original scratch DJ crew!

This was followed by the „Return of the wildstyle beatfreaks EP" (RUFO 15) in October 197 megamixing their own „hip hop love" with the phat & funny „4 tha ho's" which further established them as pioneers of not just hip hop but the big beats scene with impressive chart placeings in The buzz & big beats chart.

Which brings us to the present.
In October THE RUF finished what he considered his best 3 songs ever & quickly got Mark One & Loz in the studio along with the fresh vocal talents of Marie & a DJ appearance by Pressy.....
& so the ULTIMATE SONIC BOMBS were perfected:

BUSTA BLOODVESSEL
Pure punk hip hop attitude. Raw & fast as fuck with amazing scratching & big beats galore. If the PRODIGY/CHEMICAL BROS came up with this shit it would be a top ten certainty. EXPLOSIF!!!!!

LIFT
The ultimate high like shagging after smoking the wickedest weed, this mellow cut succeeds where all trip hop fails by actually building into a memorable tune that will stay in your head like the flu!

SUMMER IN SPACE
Combining a deep space atmosphere with haunting melodies. The nearest comparisons is PORTISHEAD but this is more uplifting & sweet, more accessible but strangely different!

These tracks all see THE RUF finally escaping (but still drawing on) his solid hip hop roots - they are actual songs with unique vibe & power, formed by a diverse range of fucked up influences inc punk, big beats, breaks, hip hop, dance music all topped with cool DJ skills, occasional Ruf rhymes & the essential Ruf attitude.

In late October 97 the JEEP BEAT nucleus remains: THE RUF - writer, producer, manager, MC, devastating DJ (check the wicked mixtapes from his set broadcast live on Italy's Radio 1). MARK ONE - super skilled scratch DJ (on Tour Dec 97 with TEXAS) LOZ - DJ, explosive MC, beatbox, bass player.

They are now signed to the up & coming ATHLETICO imprint. The producers of the UK's biggest & baddest big beats/eclectic club legends. With their power & enthusiasm working with THE RUF's own label & vision no once can stop this fucking detonation!

BUSTA BLOODVESSELS will appear on the ATHLETICO comp LP in Feb 97 before getting a 12" release with LIFT on the flip. With the anthem SUMMER IN SPACE unleashed in summer the way will be paved for the outstanding 2nd JEEP BEAT COLLECTIVE album to drop in late 98.

The JEEP BEAT COLLECITVE are available for full live shows of their material OR can be booked to do DJ sets or packages (eg inc critically acclaimed MINDBOMB show). They have over 20 dates confirmed with ATHLETICO before march 98 including a 15 date tour with MTV! The JEEP BEAT profile will be simply massive in 98 so get up & get involved!!
