Who or what, you ask, is PFILBRYTE?
You'll get different answers depending on with whom you speak.
some will tell you he's an artist and producer, others an animator and some
even refer to him a s a tech-head wonderchild of Generation Next".
I'm not a band or a DJ," says the San Francisco based renaissance
man. I play my instruments, the studio, the video screen and any other
elements that can be manipulated to my advantage."
After years of honing his studio chops, PFILBRYTE made his mark with
the infamous Dr. Octagon posse contributing live instrumentation and sounds
to the now classic Octagynecologyst LP. Octagon beatmaster and producer
The Automator later returned the favor lending a hand on PFILBRYTE's debut
LP IMPERFECTION. PFILBRYTE's first 12" of Merry Go Round"
(featuring remixes by The Automator, superstar DJ Scotty Hardkiss of the
Hardkiss Brothers, Cirrus and NYC mixmaster C. Flam a.k.a Mindswerve) earned
him a radically diverse following among electronic music and alternative
rock fans alike, each drawn by PFILBRYTE's marriage of melody and microchip.
His unique style is the result of ingenious tinkerings, blending electronic
back-beat and hip-hop flavoring with psychedelic rock and pop savvy - the
entire sound bathed in a multitude of layers and textures.
I don't really listen to much current music," he says.
I do like things that some electronic artists and producers like The Automator
and C. Flam are doing, but my real influences are more song oriented artists
such as Pink Floyd, Queen and Prince." That's one of the reasons
why I view my music as something a little different than most electronic
music." I work within the confines of the electronic/studio world,
but I use the studio as more of a scratch pad and a writing partner."
Naturally, the picture would never be complete without a spectacle synced
up to the sound. PFILBRYTE (the grandson of Walter Lantz, the creator of
Woody Woodpecker) enhances his music with vibrant computer animated images.
When combined, the two media make for a total assault on the senses. My
music may be built in a computer, but it's reflective of me, my playing
and my heart." I really believe that a failure to get my ideas
and feelings out through my art would be very unhealthy for me."
As for the mystique that surrounds him, PFILBRYTE says, Who I am
is far less important than the art I create." My goal is to take
the focus off me as a producer/writer/animator or whatever I may be viewed
as and shift that interest to the music." I'm hoping that anyone
that plugs into my music will freely interpret whatever they hear in their
own personal, private way." I'm creating music that is multi-layered
both musically and lyrically; listeners can read into it as deeply as they
feel necessary or take it at face value." |
